CARNIVAL OF FANO

The Carnival of Fano, the oldest in Italy after the Carnival of Venice. The first document mentioning Carnival celebrations dates from 1347 and is housed in the city’s historical archive.

The typical features distinguishing the Carnival of Fano from all others are: the Getto, i.e. a shower of candies falling from the allegorical floats, which is why its slogan goes: Bello da vedere e dolce da gustare(‘Beautiful sight, sweet taste’); the Musica Arabita, a group of musicians playing both traditional and unconventional instruments; and the parade of the floats, imposing structures made of rubber foam and papier-mâché, which can measure 16 m in height and cover a distance of about 2 km.

The Carnival, with around 100,000 visitors every year, has become an integral part of popular culture and of the city’s heritage, and is the most important Carnival of the Marche region.
