The port of Fano

THE PORT OF FANO

Due its geographical position, the city of Fano recognised the need for a port as early as the Roman period and by the 12th Century it had established trading links with Venice. The port was rebuilt in 1616, during the reign of Pope Paul V (Darsena Borghese) and enlarged during the 19th Century. This expansion of the port created three different operational areas, a fishing dock, shipyard area and leisure harbour. Substantial land facilities were also created - these were totally lacking in the original port and were essential for the development of the fishing industry and shipyard services.
The mouth of the harbour was also improved in order to reduce wave motion when entering the port.

THE NEW SHIPYARD AND FISHING PORT

This new dockyard will extend over a water surface of 22,000 sq.m with jetties of around 550 metres in length. There will be 91 mooring spaces, 20 of which will be twenty eight metres long and 71 eighteen metres long.

THE TOURIST PORT

The leisure harbour will cover a water surface of around 55,000 sq.m with almost 1000 metres of jetties. In this area there will be mooring spaces for 470 boats of varying lengths from 6 to 30 metres. There will also be a nautical centre on land with administrative offices and commercial services (bar, restaurant, hotel, credit card machine, shopping facilities and toilets) as well as a car park and storage area, responding to the immediate needs of those using the leisure port.
