For
twenty years, on the second Sunday of each month and the preceding Saturday,
Fano has played host to antiques experts exhibiting furniture and
furnishings, lace, and religious and secular objects. In a city so
rich in history and tradition, this antiques fair and market has powerfully
captured the interest of the public.
The original idea of establishing an antiques market was first officially
sanctioned in 1980 following the uncovering of an important 14th century
fresco painted by the Rimini school that came to light during work
on the Church of San Domenico, for many years the main centre of the
fair. Over the succeeding years the event captured the attention of
experts and major collectors. Now, with additional events, concerts
and exhibitions, above all the national annual Antique Book and Print
exhibition and market each July, this has become one of the best-known
events at national level.
Stands are set up throughout the old town in such noble surroundings
as the Pincio, the portico and cloister of San Michele, the church
of San Domenico, the gardens of Piazza Amiani and the cloister of
the Benedictine monastery. Twenty years after the first Fano antiques
fair and market, the event is still thriving, recently with over 140
exhibitors taking part.
In all probability the fair will develop into areas of specialisation,
thus making it easier to find rare and valuable objects in a market
which nevertheless offers bargains for all. |
